Sean Gallagher // Environmental Photographer

2014 Environmental Photography Award

In Sean Gallagher’s 2014 “The toxic price of leather” photo, I found the story of the shot made the image more compelling. I was originally attracted to the different tones of the person’s leg which increased my curiosity on what was the cause of this. Reading the excerpt of the photo’s significance, I found that the discoloration of the legs was caused by the toxic chemicals from leather that infected India’s Ganges River. This river happens to link to many areas of the city causing the area to be dubbed as the “country’s worst water”. In result of the high demand of Kanpur’s leather whose location resides along the bank of the Ganges River, caused the intoxication of the people’s main source of water affecting both human and environmental health.

Edward Burtynsky // Manufactured Landscapes Green Education

Burtynsky’s photographic style focuses on environmental issues as a result of man’s impact. He questions sustainability as he travels around the world covering stories of construction and more incidences of humankind’s effect on nature. 2 pictures stood out to me the most while watching this Ted Talk. The first would be his initial showing of a patch of green grass growing amongst its decaying surroundings. It spoke out to me most because it just shows the effect of environmental issues and how nature naturally recovers itself. It gives me great sadness in my heart to see the negative effect we have on our planet, but hope is restored to see the way that nature thrives through all the obstacles. The second picture that attracted me was the piles of recyclable metals. Objects that were discarded and disregarded by humans were being put back into meaning because it would serve a purpose again. What makes Burtynsky’s photos strong is that there is a backstory to his pictures that is moving and we can see that in the aesthetics of his photo. I applaud his style because he choses a topic that is often hidden or unknown to the general public. He uses his arts to raise awareness about important issues that are crucial to our future.

Ron Finley // Guerilla Gardener

Ted Talks Ron Finley

Ron Finley, a guerilla gardener from South Central Los Angeles, creates a new outlook on food and how it affects one’s lifestyle. It goes beyond health, and reaches children and communities from all over Los Angeles to come together and do something for both the environment and society. Turning run-down sidewalks into beautiful flourishing gardens to feed healthy ingredients and introducing it into a city that revolves around junk and fast food really created a difference in the lives of Ron’s neighbors. Audiences reached beyond South Central as he spoke about his passions to Ted Talks to millions of viewers. This act proved to be very beneficial educationally and health-wise.
