2014 Environmental Photography Award
In Sean Gallagher’s 2014 “The toxic price of leather” photo, I found the story of the shot made the image more compelling. I was originally attracted to the different tones of the person’s leg which increased my curiosity on what was the cause of this. Reading the excerpt of the photo’s significance, I found that the discoloration of the legs was caused by the toxic chemicals from leather that infected India’s Ganges River. This river happens to link to many areas of the city causing the area to be dubbed as the “country’s worst water”. In result of the high demand of Kanpur’s leather whose location resides along the bank of the Ganges River, caused the intoxication of the people’s main source of water affecting both human and environmental health.
